Where the Heart Is 21 Apr 00

I'm reviewing a rough cut I saw many months ago and it's possible they messed the film up since then, but hopefully not, because except for some minor, standard issues with the episodic nature of stuff adapted from books this is a total winner. Portman is fantastic in a role that in lesser hands would have fallen apart into parody and corniness, and the the strong supporting cast completes a real, highly detailed corner of the world. I'll update this after I see it again, but for now, assume an A.

05 May 00 - Yup. The script has a few moments that are pretty standard issue soap, but all the performances are great and I found the film as effective this time. A
