Stanley Tucci's directorial debut "Big Night" may well have set the bar so high he'll never get there again; comparing future work to that minor classic isn't really fair but hard to avoid. "Joe Gould's Secret" has a lot of the touches that made the first film of his so good, but some inherent weaknesses in the material (a bit episodic from the adaptation process; more of a head trip than the sensual valentine to good food that is "Big Night") make the times between those touches pretty slow to watch. Tucci is good as always and Ian Holm is great. B
