Sweet and Lowdown 24 Dec 99

Woody Allen's latest has two things missing from quite a few of his recent films: affection and intensity. Sean Penn brings the intensity in a fantastic performance as the world's second greatest guitar player; that he shines above the rest of the stellar cast would have been a feat in itself. The affection towards the 1930's jazz scene is perfectly played; it's enticing without any trace of snobbery or elitism. A good time. A-
