The Green Mile 10 Dec 99

It's hard not to compare this to "The Shawshank Redemption", since both are Frank Darabont adapting a Stephen King period prison novel. This time, we get a more immediate, visceral experience, with a more assured hand behind each scene. But the overall effect isn't as hopeful and uplifting as I had, well, hoped. I had an amazingly moving time watching this film, with certain scenes really approaching a feeling of magic, but I didn't leave it with quite the sense of a glowing future I got from the first one. I'm not sure I can really fault a film for that. Note: there are several execution scenes that are very intense. A



I can remember a time when where we went to the movies was just as important as the movies we went to see .... From the moment moviegoers arrived to buy their tickets, there was a sense of something special, a feeling that to step inside was to enter another time and place. - Gene Kelly
