For Love of the Game 17 Sep 99

There are two mixed halves to this film - the baseball game and the difficult love story Costner's character is looking back on when not on the mound. The baseball half may be the most emotionally effective sports story ever, at least for me. I really cared how it went, and it's set up so nicely there's really a question what may happen. Unfortunately, the relationship with Kelly Preston seems a bit pedestrian, not that they're not trying. I think it may be inherent in trying to put a real five year relationship into an hour. But the film's heart is completely in the right place, and the scenes that didn't quite get me are lost in the love of the game the filmmakers clearly had. Unless you really hate not just baseball but all sports, I'd go see this one. B+

I can remember a time when where we went to the movies was just as important as the movies we went to see .... From the moment moviegoers arrived to buy their tickets, there was a sense of something special, a feeling that to step inside was to enter another time and place. - Gene Kelly
