Good performances and great cinematography can't stop a nagging feeling that there's that certain SOMETHING missing from this film that makes a Scorsese film a Scorsese film. In the end, I suspect it's the scripts relatively soft narrative that pulls things apart. If you realize going in you're not getting "Taxi Driver" or "Goodfellas" or "Casino," though, it's an interesting, engaging work. B-
